Behaviour & Anxiety Support

Behavioural concerns such as anxiety, reactivity or destructive behaviour can be stressful for both pets and their families. These issues often have underlying causes, including environmental factors, learned behaviours or medical conditions.

Behaviour consultations at Dural Veterinary Hospital are provided by Dr Eleanor Tuffley, who has a particular interest in behavioural medicine. Our approach focuses on understanding the full picture and developing practical, supportive strategies that help both pets and their families.

Herbal & Natural Therapies

Herbal medicine uses carefully selected plant-based medicines to support the body’s natural healing processes. These therapies can be helpful for pets with chronic or complex conditions and are often used alongside conventional veterinary treatments.

Herbal medicine consultations are provided by Dr Nagisa Hiraoka, who has undertaken additional training in veterinary herbal medicine and integrative therapies. Her approach combines conventional veterinary medicine with carefully chosen natural therapies tailored to each individual pet.

Nutrition & Diet Advice

Nutrition plays a major role in your pet’s health throughout their life. While commercial veterinary diets and kibble work very well for many pets, we recognise that there are a variety of ways owners choose to feed their dogs and cats.

Some families prefer fresh prepared diets, home-prepared meals or raw feeding approaches. Each option can have advantages and potential risks. Our vets are happy to discuss these openly, helping you understand how to feed safely while respecting your choices and supporting what works best for your pet and your household.

Lifestyle & Environmental Health

A pet’s daily environment and routine have a significant impact on their health and behaviour. Exercise, mental stimulation, sleep patterns and household dynamics can all influence how pets feel and function within the home.

By looking at your pet’s lifestyle as a whole, we can often identify small adjustments that improve comfort, behaviour and their interaction within the family. This can be particularly important for cats, where stress may contribute to problems such as cystitis or overgrooming. Thoughtful changes to the home environment and routine can make a meaningful difference to long-term wellbeing.

Longer Consultations for Complex Cases

Some health or behavioural concerns take time to fully understand. Our longer consultation appointments allow us to explore your pet’s medical history, environment and day-to-day routine in more detail.

Having this extra time also allows us to explain findings clearly and discuss different treatment options, so you feel involved in the decision-making process. Our aim is for owners to leave understanding not only what we are recommending, but also why those choices are being made and how they will help their pet.

Working With Your Family

Every family and every pet is different. When developing treatment plans we consider the practical realities of your household — your schedule, your pet’s temperament and the level of care that is realistically manageable day to day.

Our goal is to find solutions that work both medically and practically. This may include simplifying medication schedules, considering long-acting or compounded medication options for pets that are difficult to medicate, or adapting treatment approaches so they fit comfortably within your family’s routine.
